What is Laser Etching & Marking?
Laser engraving, and laser marking, is the practice of using lasers to engrave or mark an object. The process uses no ink and does not have any tool or bit making direct contact with the etching surface. From a digital product standpoint, laser engraving solves the problem of voiding warranties and potentially damaging a sensitive and expensive product. It creates an extremely unique look and allows for detailed and variable customization.
A laser etching machine can be thought of as three main parts: a laser, a controller, and a surface. Much like a pencil, the laser beam emitted allows the controller to trace patterns onto the surface being etched. The computer controls the intensity, direction & speed of movement, as well as the spread of the laser beam pointed at the surface. Depending on the surface, settings are created in the computer to ensure the best etching results.
The term laser marking is used as a generic term covering several surfacing techniques including bonding, printing and hot-branding. Laser etching and laser marking machines are the same, therefore the two terms can be interchangeable. Laser etching has become much more effective and pronounced over the years with new specialized "laserable" materials. These include laser-sensitive metal alloys and polymers.
